What does it take to start a small company?

I have wondered about this all my life now. Whenever, I have thought about doing this, it felt like jumping off a cliff and I chickened out. It seems like everyone who ventured either had too much of backing or were pushed into it. Of course, some were pushed into it by their extreme drive!
